He leaves you outside while he checks your ID inside, even if you are on the old side. I wouldn't want to try getting in there in jeans (Though I hear really nice jeans may get you through the door). We knew the rules in advance so we were acceptably business casual. To the rules: You are greeted at the front entrance (Provided you can find the front entrance) by a "host" who eyeballs you like the docent at the Barnes. It is sufficiently rule-bound to make you feel like you are at the Barnes Museum, minus the art but plus some of the great booze concoctions you will have anywhere. This unmarked speakeasy type bar is a trip. Hop Sing rules and there are rules at Hop Sing. ![]() Cash only, and we spent $62 on 4 drinks with the tip and did not feel cheated. Highly recommended, but be aware, no sneakers, no shorts, no attitudes. I won't even begin to describe the interior of this bar/cocktail lounge other than to say no matter what decor you like you will be comfortable here. Now all of this sounds very demeaning and insulting, but somehow it came off as friendly concern and a superb business practice. After about 5 minutes he returned and asked us in and directed us to sit on a bench in a foyer while he disappeared for a few minutes only to return to quiz us about how we came to be in the place. Next we had to provide a photo ID which was taken inside by the "bouncer?" while we were left standing on the street. What's this all about?" The Cabana Girl and I were scrutinized for our appearance, as were the other old people we were with. The process is a little trying as I was thinking, "Hey, do you want my money, or do I have to play a game to spend it here. There is a small brass door bell on the left side of the door which you will need to use to summon someone from inside to gain entrance. You will need to remember that it has a gray granite exterior encasing a wrought iron gate. Take a look at the picture on other reviews, or do the Google Earth thing to find 1029 Race Street. There is no name plate, sign, or any evidence that it even exists. It has no number on the door or anywhere around it. ![]()
